WAM coordinates Schools Alive - the Smarter than Smoking Schools Program. This exciting program, delivered in partnership with Curtin University of Technology and sponsored by Healthway, RTRfm and Abmusic offers a range of activities and resources including concert incursions, song writing workshops, recording workshops and professional development sessions.

The concert incursion series is the staple of WAM’s schools program and involves contemporary West Australian acts of all styles performing at schools using industry standard production equipment. A workshop is also facilitated by the act before or afterwards to give students further insight into the craft and the industry.

The schools program aims to develop an audience for West Australian contemporary music, provide music industry skills to young people and emerging artists and raise awareness amongst young people of opportunities for involvement in their local music industry.

Professional Development Sessions
Broadening the music curriculum to include contemporary music studies provides more choice for students and boosts their level of engagement and participation in music education. Throughout 2008 WAM will be offering professional development sessions aimed at providing educators with ideas and skills for teaching contemporary music. Keep an eye out below for upcoming PD opportunities.

Contemporary Music Skills
Do you want to engage more meaningfully with your students of contemporary music? Like to help them listen to, and create music more purposefully? WAM is offering two workshops designed to build your skills in the foundations of contemporary music. Learn to play basic rock drums and guitar, and develop your understanding of how these instruments function in contemporary music ensembles. Use this knowledge to focus your students’ music-making activities, encouraging them to reflect on how their instruments are working (or not working) together.

For more information about PD’s contact WAM Education Officer, Kris Dimitroff: kris@wam.asn.au, (08) 9227 7962 or 1800 007 962 (regional WA only).

WAM Song of the Year
WAM’s Song of the Year competition is an annual event, which includes school age categories in which young people can enter their original compositions. The contest highlightings WA’s up and coming talent, and category winners receive great prizes such as recording time, cash or music store vouchers.

This is your chance to support the budding songwriters in your classroom. Encourage them to have a go and getting their songs out there! Even better, why not book a WAM Song Writing Workshop to get your students started on a song?
