WAM Regional

WAM's Regional program supports and develops regional WA music, through building, maintaining and developing relationships with many regional music organisations, groups and individuals throughout rural and remote Western Australia.

In 2006, WAM's Regional program secured funding from the Regional Arts Fund through Country Arts WA, enabling WAM to staff the Regional Officer position full-time and to provide travel and project funding. Projects include extensive, professional music industry workshops across the state, plus regional roundtable meetings to support and advise musicians and local industry workers of all ages.

'Sounds Of' Regional Recording Projects
WAM’s Regional program has also developed a recording tuition project, conducted in The Pilbara region (2006), the world heritage area of Shark Bay (2008) and Wiluna (2011), culminating in the production of local music compilation CDs.

The Sounds of the Pilbara concept was designed by WAM to provide sound recording and producing skills for emerging engineers in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The project placed two professional engineer/producers, Shaun O'Callaghan and George Nikoloudis, in Karratha to conduct a 14 day workshop with six engineers recording five acts from the Pilbara region in a 'home environment'.

One of the Pilbara region acts recorded during a ‘Sounds of’ project won a triple j unearthed competition, with the track they recorded during the program.

Sounds of Wiluna CD Launch Announced
WAM, The West Australian Music Industry Association, is proud to announce the launch of Sounds of Wiluna. The Sounds of Wiluna compilation CD is the product of a professional recording and song production tuition project, conducted in Wiluna by WAM and Studio Couch over 10 days in June 2011.

Wiluna is a remote town in the Mid West region of Western Australia. It is situated on the edge of the Western Desert at the gateway to the Canning Stock Route and Gunbarrel Highway, approximately 1,000kms North East of Perth. Within Wiluna exists a talented music community. Wiluna’s extreme isolation is a barrier for it’s local musicians to engage in many opportunities, afforded musicians and songwriters in capital cities and larger regional centers.

The Sounds of Wiluna compilation CD features six tracks, traversing the genres of Country Rock, Hip Hop, Gospel and the unmistakeable desert Reggae Rock sound by musicians based around the centre of Wiluna. In many of the songs traditional Martu Indigenous language is used in lyrical content. Combined with English and Fijian dialect, the Sounds of Wiluna CD has a truly multicultural feel.

The Sounds of Wiluna CD will be launched over two huge events in September 2011. On Wednesday 7 September, 5-9:00pm, Wiluna comes alive to celebrate this community project with a massive street party at the Ngangganawili Aboriginal Health Service Centre.

Wednesday 14 September, from 12-1:00pm
, The Sounds of Wiluna CD officially launches with a performance at the Queens Park Theatre Amphitheatre, Geraldton. This event features as part of Open Your Eyes, the State Regional Arts Conference, with every registered delegate receiving a copy of this CD.

The project has been delivered as part of WAM’s Regional program, funded by Australian Government’s Regional Arts Fund through Country Arts WA. Sounds of Wiluna is a partnership between WAM and the Wiluna Regional Partnership Agreement (WRPA).

WAM would like to thank and acknowledge RPA project partners, Ngangganawili Aboriginal Health Service, BHP Billiton - Nickel West, Newmont Asia Pacific - Jundee Operations, Mega Uranium, Ivernia-Magellan Metals, Sodexo, The Shire of Wiluna and Studio Couch.
