The Seed Fund supports emerging musicians, artists and arts workers via our 3 grant categories and 5 strategic initiatives in 2012.

Grants and initiatives are made financially possible by donations from within the music and arts community and it's thanks to our many donors, most of whom are industry professionals, that we are able to offer grants to artists in the early stages of their careers.

Applications are accepted online through sonicbids.

MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP
Applications Close: Monday 9 July 2012
Up to 25 opportunities available

The Management Workshop is a one-stop shop for practical strategies to manage artists in the establishment phase of their career. Now in it's seventh year, the workshop has hosted some of Australia’s leading emerging managers. The Management Workshop provides a platform for strategic advice and ways to enhance opportunities for bands and solo artists forging pathways in the music industry.

In a creative industry where is no set path, the most effective way to learn is by sharing knowledge and seeking out those who have gone before. Providing access to an unrivalled list of industry experts from managers to publishers, lawyers, publicists, promoters and media representatives, the Management Workshop provides an opportunity for managers to come face to face with leaders in their field.

Applications will be accepted from managers, self managed solo musicians or band members who are managing their own band. The Seed will provide and arrange transport, accommodation and meals for all successful applicants. Should you be successful all you need to do is get yourself to your closest major airport!

HILLTOP HOODS INITIATIVE

Closing: Tuesday 28 February 2012

The Hill Top Hoods Initiative is a $10,000 grant funded by Hilltop Hoods and APRA to help emerging Australian Hip Hop artists to manufacture, market and release an album.

REGISTERING FOR APRA PERFORMANCE ROYALTIES

APRA does collectively what would otherwise be difficult for writers and publishers, or music users, to do on an individual basis. Their main function is licensing music users, collection of licence fees, and payment of the performing rights owners (including original songwriters/performers & composers) in the form of royalties.

If your music is performed in public - for example at pubs, clubs, festivals and concerts - or broadcast on radio, TV (including pay TV), you are entitled to royalty payments. This is because the Commonwealth Copyright Act gives writers what are called "performing rights" which cover these uses of their music.

APRA membership gives you worldwide representation through our reciprocal arrangements with other performing right societies. We will collect royalties for you when your music is played overseas. These arrangements essentially give Australian writers the same benefits as local writers in many countries. Royalty payment is however subject to the existing copyright law in each country and the individual policies of the affiliated societies.

CLAIMING LOST APRA PERFORMANCE ROYALTIES

APRA holds a list of APRA writer members without current bank account or address details on file, that have outstanding APRA royalties awaiting payment. This list, updated monthly, is not exhaustive and only lists writers with earnings over a specified threshhold.

If your name is listed, please contact your local APRA|AMCOS Writer Services Representative for assistance. Once your details are updated, the outstanding royalties will be paid to you at the subsequent APRA distribution or mini-distribution.

PPCA PERFORMERS TRUST FOUNDATION

Established in 1975, the Phonographic Performance Company of Australia (PPCA) Performers' Trust Foundation promotes and encourages music and the performing arts by providing grants.

The grants provided are non-recurring (i.e.one-off grants rather than a periodical payment), and are determined by the four trustees of the trust:
  • two (including the Chairman) are appointed by the PPCA
  • one is appointed by the Musicians' Union of Australia
  • one is appointed by the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance (formerly Actors' Equity)

All applications for grants are reviewed by the trustees and must be for one or more of the following purposes:
  • performances at concerts at or for charitable institutions such as hospitals or homes for the aged
  • scholarships for the promotion and encouragement of musical and theatrical education
  • the promotion and encouragement of the performing arts to the general public
  • the aid or assistance of any beneficiary who is unable to adequately maintain herself/himself by her/his own exertions and other income

A grant under the PPCA Performers' Trust Foundation can be used for costs associated with the above, including:
  • Tuition fees
  • Travel costs (hire, airfares, petrol)
  • Accommodation
  • Venue hire/ PA hire
A grant cannot be used to cover wages, salaries, commissions etc.

The trustees meet four times a year to consider applications
. Applications are circulated to all trustees prior to each meeting. All applicants receive written notification once the trustees have met to consider the applications.

REGISTERING FOR PPCA MECHANICAL ROYALTIES

Established in 1969, the Phonographic Performance Company of Australia Limited (PPCA), are a national, non-government, non-profit organisation representing the interests of record labels (licensors) and Australian recording artists.

After our administration costs are taken out, the licence fees we collect are distributed amongst three groups:
  1. the owner or exclusive licensee of the copyright in the recording (usually a record label) who is registered with us as a licensor
  2. Australian recording artists who performed on an Australian recording and who are registered with us as artist
  3. the PPCA Performers’ Trust Foundation (a trust fund that makes grants for the encouragement of music and the performing arts).

PPCA grant licences for the broadcast, communication or public playing of recorded music (e.g. - CDs, records and digital downloads) or music videos, then distribute the licence fees to registered record labels and Australian recording artists.

It’s important to remember you’ll probably also need a licence from APRA (Australasian Performing Right Association) as well. That’s because there are at least two copyrights in most recordings and music videos:
  1. The copyright in the song (lyrics, composition etc.) - licences available from APRA.
  2. Copyright in the recording and/or music video of the song (a particular recorded performance) - 'blanket' licences available from PPCA, or individual licences available from the copyright holders.

The benefits of playing recorded music in your business are many and varied. PPCA make it simple to put music to work for you with a ‘blanket’ licence that covers nearly all recordings commercially released in Australia.

CLAIMING LOST PPCA MECHANICAL ROYALTIES

If your name is on this list, you've previously registered with PPCA, but your contact details need updating. Due to privacy laws in Australia, record labels are unable to disclose the contact details for their artists, which can make it difficult for PPCA to track artists who have moved. If you have registered with PPCA, please ensure you check this list and notify PPCA whenever contact details change.

If you are on this list, know someone on this list, or have any further questions - please contact PPCA.
