Did
you know that 1 in 5 Australians will experience mental illness at some
point in their lives? This could be a friend, a family
member or even the lead singer of a band you love.
The
Department of Health's Mental Health Division
and
West
Australian
Music Industry Association Inc (WAM) have joined forces to
promote
mental health and challenge the prejudice and stereotypes attached to
mental illness through a new website -
www.musicfeedback.com.au
-
containing
self-help tips,
videos &
free
music downloads. You
can also score a
FREE
CD+DVD of the hottest new West
Australian music.
Local musicians have banded together through the project to help remove
the stigma - to treat mental illness much like any other illness. The
aim is to actively encourage the seeking help or healthy
alternatives, rather than hiding mental illness or masking the symptoms
through drug, alcohol or other forms of abuse.
You can get involved by:
* sharing your tips on how to deal with everyday stress to ongoing
problems at the
forum
* supporting friends, family or colleagues with mental health problems
and encouraging them to
get help
*
uploading your songs to the website
* promoting the music feedback website using the
downloads
* getting your favourite band to provide a media statement, photos and
music to add to this campaign.
* joining the Youth Advisory Group in WA - email
merryn.kenderdine@health.wa.gov.au
The Mental Health Division will once again be sponsoring the West
Australian Music Industry Association for the
2009 Song of the Year
competition.
This
special competition category will be an opportunity
for school kids through to seasoned musicians to express their
feelings, experiences and perspectives in a healthy way. It
enables local musicians to promote their songs and fosters greater
understanding and acceptance of people with a mental illness. The
concert and awards presentation is a key event for
Mental Health Week.
