The cream of Western Australia’s music was given its annual sugar hit of WAMingtons on Saturday evening at the 2012 WAMi Awards with Claire Hooper and Dom Alessio hosting the 19th annual event at The Bakery in Perth.

Taking home the coveted Golden WAMi was Life Is Noise Director Dave Cutbush, while San Cisco cleaned up on the night, taking home 8 WAMingtons from 8 nominations, including Most Popular Group, Pop Act of the Year and Most Popular Album/EP.

Punters enjoyed performances from iconic WA bands Eskimo Joe, John Butler, Mama Kin and Dom Mariani & the Hurricane Fighter Plane.

Powerful frontwoman Abbe May took home six awards on the night, including Most Popular Live Act, Female Vocalist of the Year and Rock Act of the Year. RTR’s In the Pines was voted Most Popular Music Event, while Award hosts The Bakery were voted Most Popular Music Venue.

The 2012 Management Award was presented to San Cisco manager Philip Stevens, with Spinning Top Records collecting WA Record Label of the Year.

Earlier in the day, the WAMi Craft Awards were presented at the Saturday Spectacular. San Cisco drummer Scarlett Stevens collected Drummer of the Year, while bass player Nick Gardner collected Bassist of the Year. Engineer Dave Parkin (Sugar Army, Snowman, Jebediah) took out Recording Engineer of the Year, with Male and Female vocalist awards going to Sean Pollard (Split Seconds) and Abbe May respectively.

Festival Director Brooke Kelly said “It was wonderful to see musicians and industry people gathered together at the Awards ceremony last night to celebrate the diverse nature of WA music, and their achievements over the last 12 months. The 2012 festival saw crowds of all ages enjoy over 80 bands at events throughout Perth city and surrounds, which is what the WAMi Festival is all about.”

After the Awards wrapped up, the RTRfm Closing Party kicked off, and saw guests dance the night away to the sounds of Bastian’s Happy Flight, Sonpsilo Circus, Voltaire Twins, The Chemist and San Cisco.
