FOODCHAIN’S 2012 CRUSTACEAN CUP
Sunday 27 May, 12-5:00pm
Russell Square, James Street, Northbridge

Live sets From Astral Travel, smarts, The Shakeys, Ermine Coat & Craig McElhinney.

The Crustacean Cup local band soccer tournament returns to Russell Square on Sunday 27 May. The free event, presented on the first weekend of the WAMi Festival, combines the fun of the world game with the sometimes laughable physical capabilities of local musicians.

After an unlucky early exit in 2011, Mictacea (captained by David Egan from Badminton Bandit) are back to take on Crabs FC (captained by Kris Dimitroff from the Russian Winters) and The Rock Lobsters (captained by Jon Russo from the Chainsaw Hookers). They will be joined by a new team made up of jazz musicians! The Able Seamen (captained by Mace Francis) join the fray to battle through a round robin tournament on a 7-a-side soccer pitch.

Teams are made up of local musicians from bands like Split Seconds, Sugar Army, Red Jezebel, Russian Winters, Cal Peck, Will Stoker and the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra, all competing to win the title and impress commentator Peter Barr.

In a Crustacean Cup first, the talented NRG Cheerleaders will bring it on with energetic half time performances. So bring along a picnic, try the excellent La Cucaracha tacos or Gift of Taste Polish donuts and enjoy the sight of panting musicians playing the world game!

Live music is on the hour, knock-out games kick-off at 1:30pm and 2:30pm, while the final starts at 3.30pm. Tune into RTRFM from 3-5pm to hear sets from smRts and Astral Travel plus quality commentary of the final match.

City of Perth - Sunday Piazza Live

The Justin Walshe Folk Machine are appearing at Sunday Piazza Live at the Northbridge Piazza, corner Lake and James Streets on Sunday 27 May from 1.00pm. Craig Sinclair will also play an opening set.

Justin Walshe, who fronts up his band The Justin Walshe Folk Machine, will take the art of musical storytelling to new heights, performing songs inspired by Australia’s most infamous journey by explorers Burke and Wills.

“The fact that it took place nearly 150 years ago is almost inconsequential. You couldn’t imagine the story any better, it has everything - an epic journey full of heroes, villains, love, betrayal, triumph, disaster, heart-stopping twists and a healthy dose of dark humour. It’s also a watershed moment in Australia’s history.” Justin says.

Walshe also commented “Incredible good luck got him most of the way and a lot of bad luck resulted in their death. He was a real rock n roll explorer - all bravado and charisma but little expertise.”

In addition to their Burke and Wills inspired songs, they will play material from their previous two albums, with themes from Australia’s fascinating past, as well as Walshe’s other imaginative experiences.

The Folk Machine, who have been nominated for Best Folk Act at this year’s WAMi awards, are working on a complete Burke and Wills album that will be released later this year.

The band consists of Rhyll Wilson, who is affectionately known as the June Carter of the band for her sweet harmonies, drummer Andy Pearson, talented blues guitarist Mitch Becker and bluegrass-loving double bassist Justin Castley.

Sunday Piazza Live is a series of no charge, community events, presented by the City of Perth and the Business Improvement Group of Northbridge (the Big N). The shows run from from 1.00pm - 3.00pm on most Sundays until the end of June. For more information visit showmeperth.com.au
