2011 WA Music Video Showcase

Sunday 22 May | 7:00pm
Northbridge Piazza, corner James & Lake Streets Northbridge

Presented by Amicko Films, this celebrates snapshots of WA musical life as captured on film!

Local filmmakers will introduce three music documentaries including The Hydey, a look at the much loved Hyde Park hotel; see a snippet from upcoming feature film No Encore by Kenta McGrath which follows The Decibels on their recent WA tour; and see how live music meets visual art in Karaoke Satan. We also offer a sampling of the often forgotten art of the music video clip, by featuring outstanding video clips from the last 12 months - including Abbe May, Tomas Ford and Rabbit Island.

The Hydey

Produced by Travis Johnson, Directed by Lindsay Hallam
*Filmmakers will introduce film at Piazza

The Hydey takes a look at the notorious Hyde Park Hotel through the eyes of the bands that played there and the punters who drank there. Although it closed over a year ago, The Hydey was a key part of the Perth independent music scene, a haven for countless bands and performers. The film traces the rise and fall of the venue, and looks at the implications of its loss.

Jazz in Perth
Produced by Matt Kelly, Directed by Eddie Narain

Jazz has witnessed many generations of change and has been involved in instigating social reform. It has helped shape popular music and mainstream culture as we know it. ‘Alive And Swinging - Jazz In Perth’ documents why a thriving Jazz scene emerged in the most remote city in the world. Through interviews with many of Perth’s most respected Jazz ambassadors we see that Jazz in this city is vibrant, engaging wider audiences and capturing the imagination of young musicians.

No Encore (excerpt)
Produced and directed by Kenta McGrath
*Filmmaker will introduce film at Piazza

The New Music ensemble Decibel embarks on a tour of regional Australia, taking their strange, confronting music to small towns and baffled locals who never saw it coming. At turns insightful, bizarre and humorous, No Encore a road movie music documentary: a contemplation of the validity, and need for respect, of forms of art and self expression.

Karaoke Satan Museum
Produced and Directed by Ben Stewart and Matt Aitken

Karaoke Satan Museum, heavy metal, wooden chamber, ethnography of the beast. A meditation on adolescence, kvlt, the punks of the skater, dressing up and shredding air on your bed, summoning the devil, dialing 666 and world championship wrestling. A document of an exhibition featuring music performances from Cankang Serigala (Indo) Wildcat Fusions, Chris Cobilis, Kabouter's Forest and Craig McElhiunney.
